Josh was born on July 21, 1978 in St. Paul, Minnesota. His full name is Joshua Daniel Hartnett he's the oldest of four children. It was early on in high school that he got his first taste of theatre life He was a keen American football player at high school but had to give up when he got an injury that left him unable to play. It was Josh's auntie persuaded him to audition for a role in a theater production of Tom Sawyer. He thought it wasn't his scene at first but then realised that he actually enjoyed it! He must have been quite good to as he was given the lead role of Huck Finn! Josh graduated from South High School in 1996 and then moved to New York in hoping to expand his acting career.
He attended State University, New York for a while but left as he was not happy there. After a move to LA he auditioned for, and got a role on the ABC drama "Cracker". Unfortunately, was cancelled soon afterbeing first aired due to poor ratings (I'm sure that wouldn't be the case if Josh was on TV now!!). Determination to succeed led to Josh from landing a lead role in the 1998 film, "Halloween: H2O", in which he co-starred with screen legend, Jamie Lee Curtis. His great performance won him a nomination at the MTV Movie Awards for Best Breakthrough Performance.
Josh went on to co-star with the likes of Elijah Wood, Selma Hayrack and John Stewart in the Kevin Williamson's "The Faculty." He played Zeke, a rebellious outcast teenager. "The Faculty was not a huge success but it established Josh as one of Hollywood's best up and coming young actors.
Josh then starred along side Kirsten Dunst in Sophia Coppola's directorial debut, "The Virgin Suicides." He played Trip Fontaine, a boy whos is the object of Kirsten Dunst's desire. His next was Here on Earth where he co-starred with more young Hollywood actor/actresses, Chris Klein and LeeLee Sobieski.
Josh then starred in the controversial remake of Shakespeare's "Othello", O, (which I still haven't seen gggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!) where he played villainous Hugo. The film was delayed for several years due to explicit content. In this film he co-starred with Julia Stiles and Mehki Phifer.
Here I have to mention "Blow Dry" Why?! Because it was set in Keighley! YEY!! I live in Halifax which is SoOoOoOoO close to Keighley (next door)! Josh plays the son of a local hairdresser in the film about the national hairdressing competition that has come to Keighley. I thought it was quite funny although I'm not sure if that was the film or Josh's yorkshire accent which sounded more scottish at times! (lol SoRrY jOsH!!). In this film he co-starred with Alan Rickman and Rachael Leigh Cook.
Then came Pearl Harbor, the film to really set his name in stone! A historical romantic drama which portrayed the devastating effects of the date that will "live in infamy," when Japan bombed America's entire Pacific fleet. The film was a blockbuster and remains my fave!. It launched Josh even further to the top of Hollywood's "A-List" celebs. This led to Josh being able to choose virtually any role he wanted.
After the acceleration of his fame, Josh has gone on to star in Ridley Scott's epic war drama, "Black Hawk Down," and Michal Lehmann's comedy "40 days and 40 nights".
